Meet Chisom: A Future Professor

Chisom is a seven-year-old girl from a small village in Nigeria, where life has been tough. Her family, like many in the area, struggles to make ends meet. Her father, a farmer, and her mother, a homemaker, work hard but the frequent droughts make it difficult to sustain their crops and feed the family. This financial strain almost prevented Chisom from attending school.

    The Challenge
Chisom’s family couldn't afford her school fees or buy her books. Despite these challenges, Chisom’s desire to learn never waned. She would often read any old books her brother brought home and dreamt of going to school every day like other children. The Turning Point
Things changed when the Impact Initiative Foundation started an educational support program in her community. The program was designed to help children who were at risk of dropping out due to financial problems. Chisom was selected to receive a scholarship, which covered her school fees, uniforms, and books.
When we first met Chisom, we asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. Without hesitation, she answered, "A professor." Her ambition was clear and her eyes sparkled with the possibility of achieving her dream through education.
    Life Today
With the foundation's support, Chisom now attends school regularly. She wears her uniform with pride and is enthusiastic about her classes, especially English. Chisom’s academic performance has improved dramatically, and she is one of the top students in her class.
Her family is relieved of the financial burden of school fees and can now manage their funds better, focusing on their basic needs and even saving a little. Chisom’s success has also inspired other families in the village. Seeing her go to school every day motivates them to prioritize education for their children.
    Looking Ahead
Chisom dreams of becoming a teacher and eventually a professor to help educate other children in her village. She hopes to give back to her community and help lift others out of poverty. The support from Impact Initiative Foundation has not only transformed Chisom’s life but also brought a sense of hope to her entire community.

Sexual Assault: Survivor's Story

"I was twelve, my mum had one of those stalls you call a corner shop, I had just come from school and the sales girl who lived with us begged me to stay while she made lunch. I did that often so I did, a man walked in to buy a razor blade."

That afternoon, I was wearing a white singlet and my ill-fitted school skirt. He pulled me close to him and fondled me, it was broad day light. I blamed myself for a long time. I don't know why I didn't scream or tell anyone."
    INSIGHT
This is just one of the many stories we recieved in february for our exhibition. In our recent exhibition, we surveyed 64 secondary school students. Shockingly, our findings revealed that 12% of them, all under the age of 16, had experienced sexual assult from individuals within their trusted circles, including guardians, uncles, and neighbors. What's even more concerning is that many of these young survivors expressed not knowing how to speak out due to intense fear.
    EXPLORING THE BROADER CONTEXT
According to the UN, there were 11,200 reported rape cases in Nigeria in 2020. This is a vast underestimation due to under-reporting. 1 in 4 women experiences sexual assault before the age of 18. Additionally, around 30% of Nigerian women between 15 and 49 have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.
    Providing Support for Survivors
In SA Awareness Month, offering support is crucial. Here are some ways to help: Never Cover for Perpetrators: Encourage accountability by not tolerating or covering up acts of sexual violence. Stand with survivors and advocate for their rights.

Meet JaneFor the sake of privacy, we'll call her Jane. Jane was one of the many courageous individuals who participated in the first "What Were You Wearing" exhibition. She anonymously shared her story and guided us through the reenactment of the outfit she wore during her traumatic experiences, giving a powerful voice to her journey.
The ChallengeJane had been enduring continuous assault over a period, leaving her grappling with deep emotional and psychological scars. The trauma she faced was overwhelming, affecting every aspect of her life. Despite the pain, she found the strength to reach out to us, seeking help and support to navigate her healing process.
Life TodaySince connecting with Impactful Initiatives, Jane has become an integral part of our Support Survivors Initiative. Through this program, she has gained access to comprehensive guidance and equitable mental health support, including free therapy sessions. She is still in the program, and we know that the journey is long and would require winnowing of those situations wedged in calamity. Despite these challenges, Jane is making significant progress in reclaiming her peace and rebuilding her life.
Looking AheadWe understand that Jane’s journey to healing is ongoing and requires patience and strength. Our commitment to her and others like her remains steadfast.
